Abstract:
How does the phonology of one language interact with written word production processes in the other language? This study examines to which extent phonological representations of L1 words are activated during the writing of L1-L2 interlingual heterographic homophones in the L2 and vice versa. The alternative spelling of the non-targeted form may compete with the target form, so that bilinguals will need more time to write such homophones than unilingual control words. Such competition may arise at different levels of processing: 1) as a result of two competing orthographic forms during the orthographic selection process, and 2) as a result of phonological activation in the internal monitor just before production onset, which results in a conflict because the phonological form is related to two different meanings.
