Abstract: Listeners interpret spoken language differently, depending on the perceived identity of the speaker. Within increasingly diverse societies, it is important to understand how speaker characteristics such as accent may impact communication. In the current study, we investigate the influence of speaker accent on children’s memory for previously heard information. Given previous work showing that listeners represent foreign-accented speech in less detail than native-accented speech (Lev-Ari et al., 2018), we might expect children to have poorer memories for information provided by non-native speakers compared to information provided by native speakers. However, given suggestions that adults use more cognitive resources overall when listening to foreign-accented speech (Paquette-Smith, 2021), we might instead predict that children will have better memories for information provided by non-native speakers. ...
