Abstract:
This project presents the results of a research into effective teaching strategies in second language learning in young children. The objective of the project was to find the most effective teaching strategies for kindergarten in a French Immersion school where the children are simultaneously being taught a new language (French) and being taught the curriculum in this language. Different models of second language learning that are used globally are presented alongside the results and strengths of these models. Diverse strategies in language teaching are also explored and studied to see which are the most appropriate and effective for young children. The results demonstrate that multiple strategies such as repetition, the use of visuals, the use of music and an initial focus on oral language skills are all effective in the teaching of a second language to young learners.
