Abstract: The intermediate level Chinese plays a critical role to bridge the beginning and the advanced level of Chinese language program at the U.S. Air Force Academy where foreign language study is required. This study discusses challenges experienced by novice learners beyond inherent difficulties of acquiring a second language itself from the learners’ individual learning hindrances and impediments to academic success that they have carried from other educational and social contexts. The study discusses recognition of the problem, causes and supportive responses.
