Abstract:
International audience ; A fragment of an opisthographic lead plate was discovered in the nineteen-sixties on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa at Saint-Couat-d’Aude (Aude), about thirty kilometers west of Narbonne. The object, which remained unpublished until now, was inscribed several times in Latin. Its most recent and best-preserved text is a two-column accounting list, combining a series of male anthroponyms with an abbreviated term beginning with a P and presenting numerical indications. The names of the individuals listed are either common Latin cognomina or relatively rare Celtic names. Despite the uncertainty regarding the positions held by these men and the precise function of the list, this document significantly enriches the epigraphic corpus of the Roman colony of Narbo Martius ’ territory. This document testifies to the role of writing in daily life, as well as to the development of private accounting practices in rural areas, and it enhances the available documentation pertaining to the villae of the Narbonne hinterland. The inscription’s most original contribution is in providing new information on a category of the regional population (the indigenous incolae of peregrine status) heretofore poorly represented in epigraphic sources, and during period prior to their integration into the civic body of the colony in the early Empire. ; Un fragment de plaque de plomb opisthographe a été découvert dans les années mille neuf cent soixante sur le site d’une villa gallo-romaine à Saint-Couat-d’Aude (Aude), à une trentaine de kilomètres à l’ouest de Narbonne. L’objet, resté inédit jusqu’à présent, a été inscrit en latin à plusieurs reprises. Son texte le plus récent et le mieux conservé est une liste comptable en deux colonnes qui associe une série d’anthroponymes masculins à un terme abrégé commençant par un P et à des indications chiffrées. Les noms uniques des individus cités sont soit des surnoms latins banals, soit des noms celtiques assez rares. En dépit des incertitudes qui pèsent sur le rôle de leurs porteurs et sur l’usage précis de la liste, ce document enrichit le corpus épigraphique du territoire de la colonie romaine de Narbo Martius . Tout en témoignant du rôle de l’écrit au quotidien et du développement de pratiques comptables privées en milieu rural, il complète la documentation disponible sur les villae de l’arrière-pays narbonnais. Son apport le plus original est de livrer de nouvelles informations sur une catégorie de la population régionale très mal représentée dans les sources épigraphiques, celle des incolae indigènes de statut pérégrin, à une époque antérieure à leur intégration dans le corps civique de la colonie, au Haut-Empire.
