; The study seeks to answer which are the possible intersections between literature and international relations, and how that can contribute to this field of knowledge. Our hypothesis is that literature is inter-national, because its dependence on language makes it an instrument of power and dispute between writers and countries. Locating the role of the book in Brazil’s national foundation, we verified that literature was fundamental for projects of national development, highlighting the reflections of the Week of Modern Art and Tropicalism in the international projection of the country. Yet, literature allows countries to reconstruct their trajectories in modernity, given the external constraints of political and economic order, as it produces new symbols and identities. The study aimed, therefore, to bring literature closer to foreign policy through the enhancement of its national foundations, and to show the similarity of the international political-economic relations to the literary ones. Through the paradigmatic model developed by Amado Cervo, we tried to investigate the place of the book in each of the four paradigms of Brazilian foreign policy. It was identified, thereby, that literature played a complementary and strategic role for the foundations that guided the Brazilian State throughout the XIX, XX and XXI centuries. Thus, this project has proposed to reinforce cultural dimensions in its investigation, mainly the literary instance, in the understanding of the construction and the relationships between the modern nations. We also used the global literary space model elaborated by Pascale Casanova, called the World Republic of Letters, for the understanding of international literary relations. In them, relations of domination and subordination are present, which help to explain why globalization has not been able to generate an increase in translations that imply cultural heterogeneity, but in the prevalence of linguistic hierarchies. Finally, a broad literature review was used, as well as interconnections between different theorists, to reinforce the links between the international political relations to the literary ones, as well as the contributions of literature to the field of International Relations. Finally, we employed discourse analysis of literary passages, speeches from political figures, and interviews.
