; This study consists of a self-critical analysis of the translation of English Creole from Trinidad and Tobago, as the English variety reproduced in V. S. Naipaul's short story "The Baker's Story" (1962), into Brazilian Portuguese. The objectives include presenting excerpts of translation solutions and, based on their analysis, discussing the translation of oral marks in literature, especially in the post-colonial context. Based on the concepts of literary translation, translation of oral marks, post-colonial translation and translation of post-colonial literature, the main grammatical, syntactic and phonological characteristics in English Creole from Trinidad and Tobago and the oral variant in Brazilian Portuguese are studied, as well as the relation between the variants and the social contexts in which they are produced. A parallel between these two variants makes it possible to establish correspondences between the variant reproduced in the original story and the solutions proposed in the translation into Portuguese. In the analysis, the solutions for the correspondences found in the first stage of the translation, during a supervised training in academia, and the revisions done during the composition of this work are presented. The assessment of the correspondences and the reflections about the experience of translating Naipaul's story highlight questions regarding the act of translating literature, especially in the post-colonial context, the reproduction of oral marks in translation and the variation in Brazilian Portuguese.
