Abstract:
; The novel Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie is set in Nigeria, one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries in the world. Considering the complex multi-ethnic and multilingual context and the ethnically motivated power struggles during the Nigerian civil war (1967-70), this thesis examines how in Half of a Yellow Sun the status and function of different languages as well as the relationship between language and social, cultural or ethnic identity is represented. The aim of this thesis is to investigate which factors determine the language choices of characters in different situations and what consequences the use of specific languages has for the speakers. Based on Bourdieu’s notion of language as a form of capital and language as symbolic power, it is argued that in the novel language serves not only communicative purposes but is also a form of symbolic capital that can be used to obtain a certain benefit.
