Abstract:
'Die vorliegende Studie analysiert unterschiedliche Ausdrücke, die in der römischen Antike für die Bezeichnung von Erdbeben verwendet wurden. Als erste Untersuchung im lateinischen Sprachbereich zeichnet sie sich durch einen Vergleich unterschiedlicher Quellentypen aus. Im ersten Teil werden die in den literarischen Quellen verwendeten Substantive und Verben gemustert. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, dass die lateinischsprachigen Autoren zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten verschiedenartige Termini verwendeten. Im zweiten Teil der Studie wird ein Katalog aller Inschriften zusammengestellt, die sich direkt auf ein Erdbeben beziehen. Die meisten Texte berichten vom Wiederaufbau von durch Erdbeben zerstörten Gebäuden, der durch die Kaiser, staatliche und städtische Amtsträger und lokale Notablen vorgenommen wurde. Auf diese Weise wird die Verwendung typischer Formeln erkennbar, die im Vergleich mit den literarischen Quellen in ihrer Varianz jedoch sehr limitiert sind. Es ist aufschlussreich, dass sich diese Inschriften auf nur wenige Gebiete des Imperiums konzentrieren (auf den Westen mehr als auf den Osten, auf Italien mehr als auf die Provinzen) und dass sie in einigen Jahrhunderten verbreiteter als in anderen sind (nämlich im 1. und 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr.).' (Autorenreferat) ; 'This study analyses the several expressions used to denominate earthquakes in the Roman period. It is a new inquiry into the research on the Latin language and it is characterized by the comparison of different sources. The first part shows the several substantives and verbs used for earthquake in Latin literary sources. In this way it is possible to realize that Latin authors used various terms during the different moments of the Roman age. The second part of the study provides a catalogue of all Latin inscriptions that directly depict an earthquake. Most texts speak about reconstructions of buildings made by Emperors, state and municipal officials, local notables and which were destroyed by an earthquake. In this case it is also possible to realize the use of characteristic formulas, but there are not many in comparison with the variety of literary sources. It is interesting that these inscriptions are concentrated only in particular zones of the empire (in the West more than in the East, in Italy more than in the provinces) and they are more spread in some centuries than in others (in the first and forth century AD).'
