Abstract: 268 p. ; Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1998. ; All the Japanese bilinguals were aware of these differences but they either could not adapt to American conversational styles or chose to retain their Japanese styles. Americans also had divided opinions as to how interactions should proceed in cross-cultural conversations; some had no intention of adjusting their styles, while others tried to adjust. This resulted in some misunderstandings and uncomfortable moments in the cross-cultural interactions.
