Kinder vermitteln
; This master's thesis deals mainly with the role of young people as interpreters and translators. The first part of the paper focuses on bilingualism. In particular some of its definitions and forms are discussed are explained. Moreover the two important theories of Harris (1976) and Harris and Sherwood (1978) about natural translation are explained in detail. Then the focus is on the phenomenon of children's obligation to help out their parents who do not understand the language of the country they live in (Child Language Brokering). In particular the reasons, the contexts, the role shift in the family and the positive and negative feelings about it are discussed. It occurs with immigrant children and hearing children of deaf adults (CODAs) (Angelelli 2010, Bauer 2016, Degener 2010). Children who move with their families to a new country mediate for their parents (Tse 1996, Weisskirch&Alva 2002, Antonini 2010, Bauer 2016). CODAs represent the bridge for their deaf parents to be able to communicate with the rest of the hearing world (Preston 1994, Preston 1995, Tratzki 2002 Napier 2012). Another interesting aspect is the acquisition of both the spoken and the sign language of CODAs: they learn the sign language first and only afterwards they come in contact with the spoken language (Van den Bogaerde&Baker 2008, Baker&Van den Bogaerde 2014, Hofman&Chilla 2015). In conclusion all aspects of the role as interpreters and translators of both the immigrant children and the hearing children of deaf adults are well summarized.
