Abstract: International audience ; This article provides a descriptive overview of the system of evidentiality in Baima, a Tibetic language spoken at the border of Sichuan and Gansu Provinces, China. The overview is based on first-hand fieldwork data on the variety of Baima as spoken in Pingwu County, Sichuan. It relies on elicited verb paradigms and verb forms occurring in a corpus of traditional stories. The Pingwu Baima evidentiality system is shown to be fairly unique in the Tibetic context in its lexical choices and etymological origins. It is argued to combine features generally found in the Central and Khams varieties (such as a separate egophoric receptive marker) with some unusual developments so far only attested in some Tibetic languages spoken in the border areas between Sichuan and Gansu (the homophony between the indirect evidential and the indefinite marker).
