In: SoTL Commons Conference (2009)
Abstract: This session will describe a mixed-methods project currently underway to explore faculty and students' perceptions of disruptive classroom behaviors and effective strategies for dealing with them. Session objectives include discussing the results of this project and its implications for classroom management and institutional policies. The audience will be invited to build upon the findings reported and brainstorm additional ideas for reducing disruptive behaviors couched within what we have learned about the factors that influence them. Attendees will learn about differences and similarities between faculty and student perceptions of: 1. What constitutes disruptive behaviors, 2. The effectiveness of specific strategies in dealing with them, 3. Probable causes of disruptive behaviors, and 4. The frequency of disruptive behaviors.
