Abstract: This talk will deal with the rise of articles in Purepecha (isolate, Mexico). As a majority of OV languages (Dryer 2007), Purepecha appears not to have had articles in the 16th century. The definiteness or indefiniteness of an entity was generally encoded by other means, in particular differential marking of accusative case and of plural marker. Nowadays, in Purepecha, two articles exist: the definite ima and the indefinite ma. In a cross-linguistic perspective, the articles may emerge from different sources, two processes are well-documented: from a demonstrative to a definite article and from the numeral 'one' to indefinite article (Heine and Kuteva 2002). The first goal of this talk is to describe the stages of development of the articles. In the 16th century, ima is only attested as a distal demonstrative (Medina Plaza 1575). Nowadays it continues to function as a nominal modifier for spatial-deictic reference. Nevertheless in certain contexts, its main function is to refer to entities mentioned earlier in discourse (definite anaphoric marker). The item also refers to definite entities that are recoverable via contextually available knowledge (context-definite marker). Purepecha has not proceeded beyond the context-definite stage 3 of the six possible stages attested in different grammaticalization scales (Hawkins 2004; Heine and Kuteva 2006). The definite article is always positioned before the noun. The grammaticalization of the indefinite article from the numeral ma 'one' shows a more complex evolution to the extent that the two can be distinguished by their position in different varieties of Purepecha. In the 16th century, ma was essentially used for numeral 'one'. Nevertheless, some occurrences of indefinite ma exist. They are pragmatically marked and related to the presentation of a new entity, that is, the second stage of a five-stage model for the development of the indefinite article (Heine 1997). Nowadays, Purepecha has 'fully grammaticalized' the indefinite article: it has a generalized indefinite article to the extent that it can even be used in contexts involving plural nouns. The second goal is to show that the position of ma is not random, and it reveals three different strategies. First, in the majority of the varieties, ma always occurs before the noun no matter its function; this is a heritage of the position of the numeral. Second, in some varieties, ma follows the noun. This is an original position for ma. Nevertheless it reveals the traditional OV order of Purepecha and that of some modern varieties (Chamoreau 2009). Finally, few varieties have developed an innovative strategy, using the position in order to distinguish the function (Dryer 2005): the numeral precedes the noun and the indefinite article follows the noun. Finally, I will argue that internal features and linguistic contact with Spanish have played a role in the development of articles in Purepecha.
