Épilogue : la diglossie revisitée (1991)
In: Langage et société, N 171, 3, 2020-10-20, pp.33-54 (2020)
; In this 1991 article, Ferguson outlines a set of ideas he was able to present during various conferences on his article from 1959. Published in Word, it introduced the term “diglossia” (a calque of the French term “diglossie”) into linguistics research. Ferguson first returns to his initial aim of observing examples of what he calls diglossia and identifying their features, all with a view to devising a general theory of diglossia (its genesis, workings, and development). He then notes a number of flaws in his original article, which were uncovered through the many discussions it provoked. He finishes by drafting a table of research avenues that he would like to see explored, including understanding how situations of diglossia have developed.
