Abstract: International audience ; The present paper intends to highlight the power of the Comparative Method when reconstructing the morphological history of modern languages, even in the absence of written documents. The Banks and Torres Islands of North Vanuatu are home to 17 distinct Oceanic languages. This paper documents, for the first time, the paradigms of independent personal pronouns for all these languages – 260 forms in total. It then compares them systematically with the paradigm reconstructed for their common ancestor Proto Oceanic (Ross 1998). The rigour inherent to the Comparative Method enable us to identify 47 morphological innovations in this domain, most of which are shared across several languages. Finally, the distribution patterns of these shared innovations show overlaps, which suggests that the tree model is not the best way of representing the genetic history of language families.
