Abstract:
El budismo y el laberinto: un matrimonio borgiano (Rebekah Hein) In Jorge Luis Borges' stories "The Garden of Forking Paths" and "Death and the Compass," the author reveals a fascination with the multiplicity of knowledge and the manner in which time and history bifurcate to create a labyrinth of being. Combined with his essay "Buddhism," Borges reveals that to recognize the absurdity of the labyrinth is to attain enlightenment through true knowledge: acknowledging what one does not know. Time and Space as Borgean Dreams (Caleb Wilemon) This paper attempts to analyze the illusory nature of time in the work of Borges. In particular, it looks at the philosophical deconstruction of the “realness” of time that Borges offers in “El tema del traidor y del héroe” and arrives at a Borgean temporal conception that reflects the philosophies of Schopenhauer. Teaching Borges and Vargas Llosa in 2017: Lessons for Conservatism (Eric Kartchner) Teaching Borges and Vargas Llosa in 2017: Lessons for Conservatism (Eric Kartchner) Both Jorge Luis Borges and Mario Vargas Llosa stand apart from their generational peers as political conservatives. Many scholars believe that his ideological bent prevented Borges from receiving the world’s highest recognition for literary achievements and feared that Vargas Llosa might suffer the same fate, until in 2010 he at last received the Swedish prize. As the political pendulum in the West swings to the right, and as conservative excess displaces decency and moral obligation while simultaneously diminishing the value of truth and knowledge, the writings of these two these two anti-leftist writers challenge authoritarian, unrestrained absolutes while also demonstrating the enduring value of traditional propriety.
