Abstract:
Le wolof offre une remarquable économie structurelle, organisée autour de deux singularités typologiques. La grammaticalisation du focus dans la conjugaison (1) permet, en effet, d'expliquer le dépouillement du système intonatif de cette langue et l'absence de marquage prosodique de la focalisation qui y est attesté (2) : la focalisation, recevant une expression morphologique obligatoire, n'a pas besoin de marques supra-segmentales spécifiques. Le wolof fournit donc un exemple, typologiquement très rare, de système intonatif affranchi de l'expression de la focalisation. La langue opte ainsi pour une distribution des fonctions entre morpho-syntaxe et prosodie, dont on décrit ici l'économie. Après avoir présenté les emplois des conjugaisons focalisantes, cet article dégage l'organisation du système intonatif de cette langue : ses intonations de base (assertion, interrogation, "intonations intensives"), puis le mode de subdivision des énoncés complexes en groupements intonatifs, et enfin, les interactions entre morphosyntaxe et prosodie. Un des points particulièrement intéressants est que certaines intonations "intensives" ("exclamation", "emphase") interagissent avec la focalisation marquée dans la conjugaison, en particulier la focalisation du sujet. L'examen des données du wolof est aussi éclairant pour l'analyse intonative en général, dans la mesure où il aide à démêler ce qui relève précisément de la focalisation.
