A typology of comparative constructions of inequality in several varieties of Purepecha. The consequences of linguistic contact
In: Syntax of the World's Languages (SWL 2) ; https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00672725 ; Syntax of the World's Languages (SWL 2), Sep 2006, Lancaster, United Kingdom (2006)
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to show the relevance of a cross-dialectal study for typology taking into account linguistic contact and its consequences. In order to claim the importance of structural variation within languages for typology, a syntactic domain of comparative constructions of inequality (superiority) will be studied, in Purepecha (formerly known as Tarascan). Purepecha is classified as an isolated language spoken in the State of Michoacán, México. It has not been standardized. As other languages of Mesoamerica (Stolz & Stolz 1995, 2001), Purepecha traditionally had comparative constructions of inequality of two types (Chamoreau 1995, Gilberti 1987 [1558], Lagunas 1983 [1574]): polarity and action comparatives according to Heine (1994) or conjoined and exceed comparatives according to Stassen (1985, 2001). Nowadays, there has been a reorganization as a result of a chain reaction triggered by Spanish interference. As in other major European languages, Spanish has a particle comparative construction with 'que' which connects the comparee to the standard. The contact between the indigenous constructions and the Spanish has caused the emergence of seven constructions which may be classified in three different types. Types 1 and 2 represent new types according to Stassen's and Heine's typologies. Type 1 is a mixed type employing the Purepecha polarity construction plus the Spanish particle comparative 'más' or its Purepecha calque 'sánteru'. Type 2 is more interesting being a hybrid type, employing the Spanish degree plus relator and a locative construction (Heine 1994) with the Spanish preposition 'de'. This new hybrid locative construction (the standard is treated as a source) does not occur in Spanish or traditional Purepecha. Type 3 has the particle Spanish comparative construction with borrowed degree and relator or their Purepecha calques. After analyzing the typology of comparative constructions of inequality in several varieties of Purepecha in a cross-dialectal perspective, the importance of geographical distribution patterns will be pointed out.
