Variation in first and second language acquisition: Comparative perspectives ; : Variations dans l'acquisition des langues premières et secondes : perspectives comparatives
In: ADYLOC2011: Variation in first and second language acquisition: Comparative perspectives ; https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00867423 ; ADYLOC2011: Variation in first and second language acquisition: Comparative perspectives, Jun 2011, Paris, France (2011)
Abstract: Co-Organisation of the International conference ADYLOC2011 of the GDR : Langues, langage oral, cognition : Acquisition et dysfonctionnement ; take many forms and that is still not well understood. This topic was chosen for the conference with two main goals. The first one is to examine all types of variations during language acquisition in order to show their implications for our understanding of how language is used and learned in various situations, as well as for intervention purposes in various applied contexts. Particular attention is placed on variation phenomena that can be observed in the acquisition and disorders of oral language in relation to other communicative dimensions (for example, context, interaction, co-verbal gestures). The second aim of the conference is to stress the necessary contribution of comparative approaches in the study of variation in language acquisition. Such perspectives include various types of comparisons, which can be combined, such as: across different cultures and languages or linguistic families (e.g. typologically close or distant), different modalities (e.g. vocal and signed languages), different types of acquisition (first and second language acquisition, by the child and by the adult, early and late bilingualism or multilingualism), as well as different populations whose atypical acquisition paths (e.g. autism, aphasia, SLI) can shed light on the development of more typical children and adult learners. The study of variation in a comparative perspective can address many questions debated in language-related research among the cognitive sciences, such as: the relative weight of constraints from cognitive and linguistic systems, the impact of specific properties of source and/or target languages, endogenous and exogenous processes underlying the acquisition path of particular learners, the existence of a critical period for language acquisition. Applied research will also be discussed, particularly in teaching contexts (teaching first and second languages) and in clinical contexts (helping patients with disorders in oral language).
