Abstract: We explored the implicit effects of incidentally and intentionally formed word associations on subsequent single item recognition memory. Participants studied unrelated non-associated noun pairs either intentionally or in an incidental study condition. The strength of the newly formed associations was probed by assessing their priming effect on subsequent explicit recognition of single words. Priming was defined as the difference between the identification of targets presented in the context of their studied associate and that of targets presented in the context of a studied but notassociated word. Significant priming was found for intentionally studied pairs, but only if the prime word was correctly recognized as old, suggesting an important role for conscious recollection. In contrast, incidentally studied associates failed to demonstrate significant priming even when primes were correctly recognized. This pattern suggests that, at least when words are presented as isolated pairs, only intentional encoding fosters the formation of durable associations. We propose that the incidental encoding task used in this experiment did not lead to the integrative processing necessary for association formation, integration which might exist in more naturalistic, context embedded, incidental processing. 3 Associative links between words are often conceived as reflecting the cooccurrence of words in a language (e.g. McRae & Boisvert, 1998). Specifically, it is assumed that words that tend to co-occur frequently will become associated and consequently will activate each other in the lexicon (e.g., Spence and Owens, 1990). Many computational models of lexical organization such as HAL (Burgess, 1998; Lund
