It is made up of small fortified kingdoms built, mainly west of Lower Chari and Lower Logone. Its geographical location fragmented in a flood zone has been conducive to the dialectalization of the language. Politically, these small units were pulled between the kingdom of Kanem-Borno and the kingdom of Bagirmi.In the literature, to designate Kotoko political units, the authors sometimes speak of sultanates, chiefdoms, kingdoms or principalities. We will systematically examine the names that the corresponding languages offer us to designate the sovereign. Contemporary scientific writings attribute the origin of the Kotoko ruler's name to the Kanuri mây. This etymology does not explain all current Kotoko forms. A detour through ancient Kanuri *magi takes us back to Chadic languages other than Kotoko and raises the question of who borrowed from whom? Is it the Kotoko languages which borrowed from Kanuri, or is it Kanuri which borrowed from Chadic before returning this borrowing to Kotoko? The name of the sovereign at Logone-Birni seems to give arguments to this last hypothesis. ; Le groupe appelé « kotoko » est implanté majoritairement à l’extrême nord du Cameroun et marginalement au Tchad et au Nigeria. Il est composé de petits royaumes fortifiés bâtis, principalement à l’ouest du Bas-Chari et du Bas-Logone. Sa situation géographique morcelée en zone inondable a été propice à la dialectalisation de la langue. Politiquement, ces petites unités ont été tiraillées entre le royaume du Kanem-Borno et le royaume du Baguirmi. Dans la littérature, pour désigner les unités politiques kotoko, on parle tantôt de sultanats, de chefferies, de royaumes ou de principautés. Nous examinerons systématiquement les noms que les langues correspondantes nous offrent pour désigner le souverain. Les écrits scientifiques contemporains attribuent l’origine du nom kotoko du souverain au kanuri mây. Cette étymologie n’explique pas toutes les formes kotoko actuelles. Un détour par le kanuri ancien *magi nous renvoie à des langues tchadiques autres que le kotoko et posent la question de savoir qui a emprunté à qui. Est-ce le kotoko qui a emprunté au kanuri, ou est-ce le kanuri qui a emprunté au tchadique avant de restituer cet emprunt au kotoko ? Le nom du souverain à Logone-Birni semble donner des arguments à cette dernière hypothèse.
