La fixation du texte par écritinterviendra par la suite. Cependant, certains types de savoirs et de savoir-faire traditionnelsy sont encore transmis oralement, la source écrite apparaissant comme un recours en cas dedéfaillance de l’oralité. Les deux systèmes, oral et scriptural, coexistent donc en Inde. Parcontre, au sein de la descendance tamoule de Martinique et de Guadeloupe, l’oralité seule asurvécu. Aux Antilles françaises, le tamoul, qui n’est utilisé que lors des cultes et des ritesfamiliaux, est devenu une langue sacrée. Il semble qu'un répertoire qui s’élèverait à de plusde quatre cents chants, prières et pièces de théâtre y ait été préservé et transmis oralementdepuis plus de 150 ans. Deux terrains de recherche dans ces îles nous ont permisd'enregistrer une cinquantaine de chants. L’analyse de ceux-ci nous a conduit à constater deschangements linguistiques considérables par rapport au tamoul actuellement parlé en Inde,changements dus notamment au contact avec les langues des îles et à la perte progressive del’emploi de la langue tamoule. Mais malgré ces changements, nous avons pu « reconstituer »certains de ces chants en nous appuyant sur des textes imprimés en Inde au début du XXesiècle. Par ailleurs, depuis une trentaine d’années, les Antillais d’origine tamoule rétablissentdes contacts avec l’Inde et le Pays Tamoul et montrent un regain d’intérêt pour la langue deleurs ancêtres. ; In Tamil Nadu and in the rest of the Indian world, the textual tradition wasdesigned, retained and transmitted orally from generation to generation. The retaining of thetext in writing will occur afterwards. However, some types of traditional knowledge andknow-how are still orally transmitted, whereas the written source appears as a recourse incase of failure of the orality. So, both systems, oral and written coexist in India. On the otherhand, within the Tamil descendants in Martinique and Guadeloupe, only orality has survived.In the French West Indies, Tamil, which is only used during worship and family rites, hasbecome a sacred language. It seems that a repertory, which could amount to more than fourhundred songs, prayers and theater plays, has been retained and transmitted for more than150 years in these islands. During two short fieldworks in these islands we were able torecord about fifty songs. Their analysis has lead us to recognize considerable linguisticchanges in comparison with the currently spoken Tamil in India, mainly due to contact withthe languages of the islands and the progressive loss of the use of Tamil language. In spite ofthese changes, we were able to « re-constitute » some of these songs on the basis of textsprinted in India at the beginning of the XXth century. Moreover for about thirty years, theWest Indians of Tamil origin have been re-establishing contacts with India and Tamil Naduand have shown growing interest for their ancestors’ language.
