Homophone reduction: Focus vs. Accessibility vs. Phonological rhyming constraint (anti-epistrophe) ...
Wagner, Michael. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: We test whether a homophone antecedent can cause deaccentuation of a word, even though its meaning is not salient in the discourse. We test an account of focus which allows for metalinguistic contrast marking. Under this account, words should deaccent if there is a homophonic antecedent, but only if there is a phonological contrast to the antecedent elsewhere in the utterance (so in completely repeated utterances there will be no prominence shift, although there might be slight reduction). This prediction distinguishes the focus account from one in terms of accessibility/motor-facilitation and from an account in terms of a phonological constraint against epistrophe. ...
