外国語(英語)学習に対する学生の不安に関する研究(5)

Abstract:
1993年4月に,本学1年生197名を対象に,英語学習のどのような活動についてどの程度不安を感じているのか,英語で話すときに感じる不安の原因は何か,学生に不安を感じさせる教師の性格,態度にはどのようなものがあるか,学生は自分の英語力をどのように評価しているのかについてアンケート調査を実施した。その結果,学生は授業中皆の前で英語で話すことに強い不安を感じること,その主な理由は,間違ったり変なことを言って恥をかきたくないと思っているからであること,また,教師が親しみやすければ,学生はそれ程授業中不安を感じないですむこと,最後に自分の英語力に対する自己評価は全般的に低いことが明らかになった。 ; In this study, questionniare items have been improved with one item being rewritten and some others being newly introduced. This was done based on the results obtained from previous studies by both other researchers and the author. The purposes of this study are to find out : 1) how much anxiety students feel toward typical learning activities in English classes ; 2) what the reasons are students feel anxious about speaking activities in the classes ; 3) what kinds of characteristics and attitudes students expect teachers to have so that students feel less anxious ; 4) how students evaluate their own English abilities. Data were gathered from 197 Japanese university freshmen, using a revised questionnaire, which was administered in April of 1993. The data were analyzed by ANOVA. The results revealed that 1) students felt most anxious when speaking English in front of their classmates ; 2) students were most afraid of getting embarrassed by making mistakes in speaking English ; 3) students felt less anxious when teachers were friendly, while feeling more anxious when teachers directly encouraged them to speak in English or praise them ; 4) students felt that they couldn't answer in English because they were so nervous when called on to answer questions in English.
