La politique linguistique coloniale italienne dans la Corne de l'Afrique

Abstract:
International audience ; This contribution attempts to illustrate Italy’s colonial linguistic policy in the Horn of Africa. After briefly depicting the ideological foundations of colonial linguistic policies, this study focuses on the italianisation process implemented in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. Special attention is paid to italianised place names. The article intends to show that the colonial policy of Italy, like those of other colonial powers, fed on a linguistic and cultural racism aiming to dismantle African languages and impose Italian instead. Italian today is neither a vehicular tongue nor a language of instruction, and even less so an official language in the countries of the Horn, which unambiguously attests to the failure of Italy’s colonial linguistic policy. ; Cette contribution se propose d’illustrer la politique linguistique coloniale italienne dans la Corne de l’Afrique. Après avoir brossé succinctement les bases idéologiques des politiques linguistiques coloniales, l’étude focalise l’attention sur le processus d’italianisation en Érythrée, Éthiopie et Somalie. Une attention particulière est réservée à l’italianisation de la toponymie. L’étude montre que la politique coloniale italienne, comme celles des autres puissances coloniales, avait à sa base un racisme linguistique et culturel dont l’objectif était de démanteler les langues africaines et imposer la langue italienne. Le fait qu’aujourd’hui cette dernière ne soit ni une langue véhiculaire, ni une langue de l’éducation, et encore moins une langue officielle dans les pays de la Corne, démontre clairement l’échec de la politique linguistique coloniale italienne.
