Abstract: Given the mixed results found in the literature on the impact of orthography, in this study we examine whether L2 learners of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) establish accurate phonolexical representations of target vowel contrasts (/e/ ~ /ɛ/ and /o/ ~ /ɔ/) in response to diacritics in the input. Specifically, we examine whether learners have more accurate encoding of this contrast when the words are marked with the diacritic than when they are unmarked. In order to examine this relationship, 20 L1 English-L2 BP learners will complete an AX discrimination task, a lexical decision task, and an accent marking task. ...
