; Chatbots are computer programs capable of exchanging text messages with humans, simulating a conversation. These programs have been around for more than 50 years, but have recently gained relevance as instant messaging apps such WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger became omnipresent in today’s smartphones. In 2016, Facebook allowed pages to develop their own chatbots, that could talk to users through the Messenger platform. Eurekka is a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy based psychoeducational chatbot that helps users learn emotion regulation and mindfulness skills directly through Messenger. The bot uses buttons and a tree-like structure to guide users along its semi-structured dialogues. These dialogues use multimedia resources (GIFs, videos, emojis) to simplify complex concepts and make the user experience as human as possible. The bot can also start up a conversation with its more than 30 thousand users, personalizing the dialogue based on users’ individual variables. In the future, technologies like Eurekka can help psychotherapists, psychiatrists and health professionals monitor patients in real time, increase adherence to treatment and deepen the therapeutic alliance. To ensure these benefits, it’s essential to establish ethical boundaries that respect users’ online privacy and freedom.
