Word order and emergence of meaning in French and Chinese ; Ordre des mots et émergence du sens en français et en chinois

Abstract:
French and Chinese, both geographically and linguistically classified, are two languages that are far apart and show different language tendencies. According to G. Guillaume, Chinese is a ‘character language’ and French is a ‘word language’. Xu Tongqiang considers Chinese to be a ‘language with a semantic dimension’ and the Indo-European ‘languages are languages with a syntactic-morphological dimension’. According to us, it is assumed that Chinese is a ‘semantically oriented language’ while French is a “syntactically oriented language”. Faced with this typological difference, we consider that the basic level in Chinese grammatical analysis is based on a relative dualism 'characters-words' and that in French on a single level, the level of words. Therefore, it is expected that the comparison of word order between the two languages and the position of “meaning” in Chinese and French will prove this hypothesis. In our opinion, meaning and word order influence each other. To confirm this interrelation between form and meaning, we mainly use word order because of its materialization. However, because there is no perfect method suitable for Chinese grammatical analysis, there are still difficulties in the analysis of Chinese word order. There are also ambiguities in terms of the identification of grammatical functions in Chinese. Therefore, this study will review such basic concepts as Chinese characters, morphemes / lexemes (in French), words, phrases (in French) / “duanyu” (in Chinese), and sentences, so that the research on Chinese grammatical functions can be dealt with later, for grammatical function is the core of word order. By reviewing different linguistic approaches, we believe that the three-dimensional theory is the most appropriate for the identification of grammatical functions in Chinese. Finally, in the process of analyzing the word order of Chinese and French, the status of “meaning” is carefully observed in the two languages, and the basic structural unit of Chinese is believed to be the pairs of “character-word”, while those in French are “words”. ; Le français et le chinois, deux langues considérées comme à la fois géographiquement et linguistiquement éloignées, présentent différentes tendances linguistiques. Selon G. Guillaume, le chinois est une langue à caractères et le français une langue à mots. Xu Tongqiang considère que le chinois est une langue à dimension sémantique. Selon nous, le chinois est une langue à tendance sémantique et le français une langue à tendance syntaxique. Face à cette différence typologique, nous considérons que le niveau de base dans l’analyse grammaticale du chinois repose sur un dualisme relatif ‘caractères-mots’ et celui en français sur un seul niveau, à savoir le niveau des mots. Nous voulons démontrer notre hypothèse dans la comparaison de l’ordre des mots entre les deux langues et dans le rôle du sens en chinois et en français. À notre avis, le sens et l’ordre des mots s’influencent l’un et l’autre. Pour confirmer cette interrelation entre la forme et le sens, nous recourons principalement à l’ordre des mots en raison de sa matérialisation. Pourtant, il existe encore des difficultés dans les analyses de l’ordre des mots du chinois, car nous ne détenons pas d’une méthode propre, appropriée à l’analyse grammaticale du chinois. En conséquence, nous allons revoir les notions de base, à savoir celle de caractère chinois et de morphème / lexème (en français), de mot, de syntagme / duanyu (en chinois) et de phrase pour ensuite pouvoir mettre en œuvre le questionnement sur l’identification des fonctions grammaticales en chinois, puisque ces dernières sont les pièces maîtresses dans l’ordre des mots et qu’il reste des ambiguïtés sur leur définition. En revoyant différentes approches linguistiques, nous pensons que la théorie des trois dimensions est la plus appropriée pour l’identification des fonctions grammaticales. Enfin, en analysant l’ordre des mots en français et en chinois, nous observons la position de sens dans les deux langues et nous nous rendons compte que les unités structurelles de base en chinois sont composées d’un dualisme relatif ‘caractères-mots’ et que celles en français sont des ‘mots’.
