The inhibitory effect of a masked word-prime in a lexical decision task: effect of the relative lexical frequency and the previous exposure ...

Abstract: Different models postulate that lexical competition is a key process of visual word recognition (e.g., Grainger & Jacobs, 1996; McClelland & Rumelhart, 1981). According to these models, the lexical competition arises between multiple lexical representations activated simultaneously by highly similar orthographic input and should be associated with a processing cost. In a masked priming paradigm, the processing cost may appear as a differential effect of the prime depending on its lexical status (i.e., word/nonword). In a lexical decision task, if the target word is primed by a pseudoword differing from the target by a single letter (i.e., its orthographic neighbor, ON, e.g., cassive-MASSIVE in French), the response to the target should be facilitated. This happens because the prime initiates the processing of letters shared between the prime and the target. In contrast, if the target word is primed by a real-word ON stored in the mental lexicon, (e.g., passive-MASSIVE), the faciliatory effect should ...
