The Effects of Using Computer-Based Instruction to Teach ESL Students Reading

Abstract: The purpose of the research was to investigate the value of using the reading components of PLATO, an integrated learning system, with English as Second Language students. During the research, I considered the students' achievement level, as well as, the overall value of the program to students. The action research included pre-posttests, observations, interviews and surveys. The ten Hispanic student participants ranged in grades from first to sixth. The teachers who participated in the study were two Early Intervention teachers and five regular education teachers. The students participated in using PLATO for three weeks during their morning language block in special sessions that involved only the students in the intervention. The students also used the program for 30 minutes during regular classroom time each day. The research findings suggested that the students not only enjoyed the program but also demonstrated achievement in reading levels. The results of the study were communicated to the learning community through a brief faculty meeting with the teachers and staff that participated in the intervention.
