Variación léxica septentrional en inglés moderno temprano a la luz de su representación literaria

Abstract:
Esta Tesis Doctoral se concibe como una contribución lingüística al panorama desolado de la variación regional inglesa durante el período conocido como el Inglés Moderno Temprano (1500-1700). El trabajo trata de poner de relieve la necesidad de dar respuesta a los múltiples interrogantes que han aflorado durante décadas acerca de las otras variedades de habla que representan la verdadera realidad lingüística de este intervalo. Más en concreto, el análisis pretende desentrañar las particularidades léxicas del inglés septentrional a partir del primer corpus compuesto por ciento treinta y seis textos literarios que custodian vestigios lingüísticos del norte de Inglaterra. Abrimos paso a través de un primer capítulo donde se examina la interconexión entre la ideología lingüística de la época y el arraigo de la periferia regional inglesa por medio del artefacto literario y su recreación lingüística. En el segundo capítulo, emprendemos un recorrido por el ejercicio lexicográfico de los siglos XVI y XVII con el fin de dejar constancia del valioso testimonio que ofrece para evaluar la palabra norteña usada en el medio literario del momento. Perseguimos, con ello, elaborar una base teórica y metodológica que facilite el análisis léxico desde una postura sincrónica dentro de la historia, y sortear los anacronismos de los diccionarios modernos que han distorsionado habitualmente una aproximación semejante. El tercer capítulo se centra en el estudio de las voces reunidas. Dedicamos atención pormenorizada a su distribución geográfica, etimología, estructura morfológica y semántica. En cuarto lugar, ordenamos en un glosario la información relativa a los vocablos recogidos, dando a conocer el perfil diacrónico de cada uno de ellos desde el siglo XVI hasta la actualidad. Asimismo, mostramos el uso literario concreto de las voces por medio de más de un millar de ejemplos extraídos del corpus, de los cuales sólo se han documentado cien hasta la fecha. En suma, este estudio aparece como una pieza de engranaje que arroja luz al vacío que se extiende entre el Inglés Medio y etapas más documentadas, así como cohesiona la historia de una variedad silenciada por el estándar. Al mismo tiempo, remedia ciertas lagunas de la lexicografía y la lexicología inglesa regional, y subsana las deficiencias documentales de elencos históricos y dialectales tan sobresalientes como Oxford English Dictionary e English Dialect Dictionary. ; This doctoral thesis means a linguistic contribution to the untrodden field of Early Modern regional dialect variation. It aims to shed light upon the other histories of English which have been notably disregarded by scholarly tradition. In particular, this study endeavours to clarify at some points the diachronic background of northern English lexis by means of the first corpus of literary documents where traits proper to this silenced variety are attested. It consists of one hundred and thirty-six texts which comprise examples of popular and mainstream literature (dialect literature and literary dialect). The first chapter examines the close interconnexion between Early Modern linguistic policy and the regional periphery in England. It looks at the idea of northernness aided by contemporary, often perceptual, literary testimonies, and the artistic recreation of popular images about the North. A survey of the most relevant phonological and morphological markers is made so as to demonstrate how literary artefacts of the period articulated both northern speech and those cultural traits associated with this variety. The second chapter tackles the valuable evidence lent by Early Modern lexicography about northern vocabulary, with a view to evaluating our data from a contemporary perspective. It is our purpose to avoid anachronisms and linguistic fallacies that might distort an approach of this kind. The third chapter deals with the lexical analysis of the words gathered. Careful attention is duly paid to their Early Modern distribution, etymologies, morphological and semantic structure. Finally, a glossary is presented where the diachronic profile of every single term is outlined from the 1500s up to the present moment. In parallel, more than one thousand literary documentations are included in order to illustrate the lexical status of these words. Remarkably, OED and EDD have registered less than a hundred of these attestations, many of which are antedatings that illuminate the blurred lexical scene of northern English during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
