Amith, 2012 Abstract: Francisca Pérez habla de cómo se puede teñir hilos para los tejidos. Para eso, se usa partes de diferentes árboles, arbustas y hierbas como del to:to:kowit (Trema micrantha (L.) Blume), la raíz de kantsili:n (Smilax sp.), corteza del eskowit (Croton draco Schltdl. & Cham.) y la corteza del li:li:kowit (?Alnus jorullensis Kunth). Se e consigue mucha corteza de cada árbol y de la raíz del kantsili:n. Se hierve todo en una cubeta grande y se espera que se reduzca el agua dejando la tinta con la concentración necesaria. A cada rato se revisa si ya va tomando color el agua, para probar se sumerge un hilo en el agua. Si el hilo todavía no toma un color fuerte, hay que esperar. Se sigue probando y cuando ya se pinta bien, se meten los hilos en el agua para teñir hasta que llegue al color de la canela. Este color se parece mucho al color natural del koyo:ichkat. La planta del xo:chite:kma:it (nombre no conocido) también se puede ocupar para teñir hilos. Se corta la planta con su tallo, sus raíces, y sus hojas y se ponen a hervir igual como la corteza de los diferentes árboles. El xo:chite:kma:it tiñe los hilos de color amarillo, parecido a la yema del huevo. En general cuando se meten los hilos en una cubeta, para que se tiñan bien hay que dejarlos ahí por un buen rato. También al sacarlos se cuida de que no les pegue el aire. Antes teñían así hasta la manta porque no había tintes como ahora. Si uno quiere, para teñir se puede usar la corteza del árbol de li:li:kowit, sin revolverlo con corteza de otros árboles porque tiene mucha savia. No puede bien describir el color, pero los hilos quedan con un color café oscuro, más o menos. La raíz del kantsili:n también se puede usar sin revolverla con la corteza de otros árboles. Con esta raíz se agarran los hilos un color morado, como el agua de jamáica. Sólo la corteza del eskowit no se puede usar sin revolver porque pinta los hilos un color negro muy fuerte. Después de teñir los hilos se sacan del agua y se cuelgan para secar. Enseguida ya se pueden tender los hilos para tejer.
