UPPER MANTLE INHOMOGENEITY IN THE WESTERN PART OF CENTRAL ASIA (O NEODNORODNOSTI STROENIYA VERKHNEI MANTII NA ZAPADE SREDNEI AZII)
In: DTIC AND NTIS (1968)
Abstract: The translation is a study of the problem of heterogeneity in the structure of the upper mantle. At present, gravimetric data are one of the basic sources of information concerning the structure of the upper mantle. However, gravimetry itself can solve only limited problems. It is possible to eliminate the gravity effect of basic heterogeneities of the earth's crust from the Bouguer anomalies. This can be done by securing data on the crustal structure by the method of deep seismic sounding then calculating the gravity effect of boundary surfaces of the earth's crust. This is in conjunction with the gravimetric information. The residual gravity anomalies will be much more closely connected with heterogeneities of the upper mantle. Residual gravity anomalies were calculated for the western regions of Central Asia. The analysis of the density characteristic of the crustal section in the Turan plate showed that the basement surface and the M surface are the most active gravity boundaries. The gravity effect of the basement surface relief was calculated by using increasing excessive density in proportion to depth.
