Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.) ; In a cohort study, which will be described below, children whose reading skills were lagging behind their classmates’ at the end of the first grade were individually tutored for thirty minutes daily for a period of 14 weeks. The concept follows the idea of “Reading Recovery” by Mary Clay (1993) and examines the question whether these children can be effectively supported by intensive short-term tutoring to improve their reading skills. An essential part of the improvement is some specific vocabulary, selected on the basis of syllable phonological considerations, affecting cross-curricular themes and occuring repeatedly in the employed texts and books. First of all the reading development of two brothers with an immigrant background will be inspected. This is interesting as the social and economic class can be excluded as a confounding variable. Since the brothers were also identical twins, this conclusion also applies to the genetic factor. The development of these two children will be compared to the development of all the sponsored (N=35) and not sponsored children (N=188) to finally discuss the effectiveness of the promotion according to the results of the multivariate tests.
