A Communication Class: A Place Where Things Happen
Abstract: 243 p. ; Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1997. ; This study concerns the effectiveness of a communication course for underprepared students from the perspective of the students, the teacher and the institutional representatives utilizing teacher research. Data from the students was collected by means of journals, writing assignments, class discussion, interviews, and conferences. Other data was collected via teacher reflection on the events of the classroom. The results indicated that use of integrated reading and writing assignments in a relaxed classroom format which promoted problem-posing situations and critical thinking was perceived successful from the perspective of the students and the teacher. The results also indicated that there is a need for the institutional representatives to consider multiple definitions of success in evaluating the effectiveness of this course in order that the needs of the individual students might be met.
