Abstract: A literatura infantil é uma ponte essencial para a criança se tornar um bom leitor no seu futuro, proporcionando-lhe oportunidades para sentir emoções, desenvolver a capacidade de concentração, raciocínio, análise, crítica, reflexão, estimulando a sua imaginação de forma prazerosa e suscitando o gosto pela leitura. No ensino de uma língua estrangeira, os contos serão uma porta de entrada muito eficaz para as aprendizagens previstas para o Ensino Básico. Desde muito cedo que as crianças conhecem diversos contos de fadas e maravilham-se com o seu encantamento, magias, aventuras, personagens, fantasia. Nestes contos, existe um amplo vocabulário que vai enriquecer o conhecimento lexical de Inglês por parte dos alunos. Pressupondo que o professor de Inglês saberá usar e tirar partido deste material tão rico e útil, vai ajudá-los a aprenderem Inglês duma forma bastante eficaz e motivadora. Este trabalho mostra a importância da literatura infantil na aprendizagem do Inglês no 3.º e 4.º ano do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e os benefícios que as histórias podem trazer. Apresenta também os resultados positivos que as atividades levadas a cabo em contexto de estágio trouxeram no processo de ensino da língua Inglesa numa instituição de ensino privada. ; Children’s literature is an essential bridge for children to become good readers in the future, offering opportunities for them to feel emotions, develop the capacity for concentration, reasoning, analysis, critical, reflection, stimulating their imagination in a pleasurable way, fostering the taste for reading. In the learning of a foreign language, stories are a very effective gateway for foreseen learning in Primary school. From an early age, children know different fairy tales, marvelling with their enchantment, spells, adventures, characters, fantasy. In these fairy tales, there is a wide range of vocabulary which will enrich the English lexical knowledge on the part of students. Assuming that English teachers will use and take advantage of this rich and useful material, he/she will certainly help students in learning English in an extremely effective and motivating way. This work shows the importance of children’s literature in the process of learning English in grades 3rd and 4th at primary school, and the benefits that stories can bring. It also presents the positive results of the activities carried out in a work context in the process of learning English language in a private institution.
