Abstract:
While social distancing is an essential aspect of slowing the spread of the coronavirus, individuals are reporting significant levels of loneliness and other forms of psychological distress. Emerging adults (ages 18-29) specifically are struggling as their need for social connection is critical to their development and mental health. Guidelines from various health organizations recommended to stay connected, but the lack of nonverbal cues in electronically mediated communication (EMC) makes maintaining relationships online more difficult. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, our online communication has been advancing, so that some nonverbal cues, such as gestures and facial expressions, can be replicated in text conversations. Emoticons and emojis have made connecting emotionally with others a possibility, especially with a population of emerging adults who are adept with technology.
