Abstract: A large body of evidence suggests that predictive language processing is one of the main reasons why interlocutors can communicate so effortlessly, accurately, and efficiently via the verbal medium. However, the effects of factors that moderate predictive language processing among adults, such as age and literacy, as well as their potential interactions, are not yet well understood. Whereas reading skill has been positively linked to language-mediated anticipatory eye moments, the effects of high age appear to be more varied and may depend on whether age-related differences in processing speed and memory capacity have been accounted for in statistical analyses. In terms of their interaction, it may be possible that the potential cognitive decline caused by high age can be buffered by advanced language skill. To study the interactive effects of age and reading skill within the predictive processing field online, a maze task will be used, in which sentences are presented as sequences of choices between two ...
