Abstract: Prior research on the so-called iambic trochaic was conducted on sequences of tone, or on sequences of speech syllables that, when heard as words, constituted nonsense words ("baba" or "gaba" /"baga", ...). We test whether the same generalizations apply when listeners listen to sequences of actually existing words in the speech stream, and at the same time try to conceptually replicate recent results from experiments that show evidence that the ITL results from the simultaneous parsing of the signal along two dimensions, prominence and grouping.
