Abstract:
The voice is a common carrier for a wide range of communicative signals. The most obvious of these signals are speech, song, and the expression of emotion. The voice also carries socially relevant information about the person to whom it belongs (Lavan, Burton, Scott, & McGettigan, 2019), including cues to social dominance and attractiveness (McAleer, Todorov, & Belin, 2014). Female voices are typically perceived as more attractive when they have a higher pitch and sound smaller (Babel, McGuire, & King, 2014; Pisanski & Rendall, 2011; Xu, Lee, Wu, Liu, & Birkholz, 2013). Male voices are perceived to be more attractive when they have a lower pitch and sound larger, although female preferences for these voices may vary based on cycles of fertility (Apicella and Feinberg, 2009; Jones et al., 2008; although see Jünger et al., 2018).
