COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE GENITIVE CASE MARKERS IN KOREAN AND JAPANESE
Abstract:
Due to their similarities, Korean and Japanese have been studied in the field of comparative linguistics as well as historical linguistics. Although various elements of the languages such as syntax and grammatical morphemes have been compared, there has not yet been a systematic approach on the historical development of the genitive case markers of Korean and Japanese. My study addresses this gap by providing a systematic comparison between the genitive case markers of Old Korean (OK) and OJ (Old Japanese) and accounting for their historical development. In investigating the nature of usages of these genitive case markers, which do not conform to the known complementary distribution criteria (based on animacy and honorification of the preceding noun), this study re-evaluates the exceptions both in OK and OJ, explaining that in certain structures, other elements take precedence over the criteria, which applied to both languages. Additionally, this study explores the origin of the obsolete OJ nominative case marker -i, which shows limited distribution in OJ sources and provides strong evidence supporting the cognate relationship between the OK/MK (Middle Korean) genitive case marker -s and OJ genitive/locative case marker -tu. ; Ph.D.
