Abstract:
This chapter examines orthographic errors produced by tertiary Korean heritage learners at an intermediate level by identifying high frequency and high occurrence rate error items through a corpus-based error analysis of their written compositions. They report that errors in vowels due to sound similarity, and consonants due to sound alteration and sound similarity were identified as the main patterns of KHL learner errors, noting that KHL learners rely heavily on aural cues and have a tendency to write the way they speak. Joo and Shin suggest that KHL learners resemble KFL learners in interlingual aspects such as difficulty due to one-to-one discrepancy in Korean and English sounds, but also resemble young native Korean speakers’ errors which mainly occur due to phonemic transcription attributable to learners’ lack of morphophonemic knowledge and colloquial transfer. As a pedagogical implication they suggest a need for differentiated teaching methods for KHL learners that focus on orthographic conventions and homonyms rather than individual syllables or words of high frequency errors.
