Abstract:
The aim of this project is to investigate the relationship between the linguistic complexity of scientific statements, trust in science and scientists, and prevention behavior in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Why would complex scientific communication decrease trust? One possible pathway is that it elicits negative feelings of social exclusion in the reader (Hitlan et al., 2006; Premji et al., 2008), which in turn have been linked to reduced trust (Forgas, 2003; Zwingmann et al., 2017). In our recent study in the context of mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic (Lux et al., 2021), we found an initial confirmation of the proposed pathway investigated in the context of mask wearing.
