Abstract: • The debate on whether phonological information of embedded radicals play a role in Chinese character recognition and semantic learning remains highly controversial (Tong et al., 2020). • The experimental design might be confounded by the selection of samples, task stimuli, and task types (Williams & Bever, 2010), resulting in the divergences of empirical findings. • The present study aims to fill the research gaps by addressing the debate on the necessity and role of phonology in the acquisition of the categorical and specific meanings of Chinese semantic-phonetic compound pseudocharacters.
