A Class of Transformational Grammars.
In: DTIC AND NTIS (1971)
Abstract: A class of transformational grammars was studied where the class of base grammars is different from the phrase structure grammars. The base grammar is essentially characterized by two types of rules - adjunction and replacement rules. One advantage of these grammars is that a very natural distinction can be made between embedding for a relative clause and for a sentential subject or object. Using a base grammar of this type, a transformational grammar was defined. Some detailed examples are given. Properties of the language of the transformational grammar were studied. Certain shrinkage and growth properties of transformational derivations were also studied. (Author) ; Sponsored in part by Grant NSF-GS-2509.
