Abstract:
Abstract In classes as diverse as language classrooms, oftentimes not all students' needs are met. In a high school of approximately 2400 students, this study examines how to address this disparity between foreign language teaching and student achievement. To do this the gifted education curriculum model, ¨differentiation” is implemented over the course of 3 weeks. The purpose of this study is to examine how differentiation can be implemented in the diverse foreign language classroom to improve all students’ achievement. The type of differentiation that is proposed is an individualized teaching style. *Over a three-week period, students are taught French using differentiated instruction incorporated with general teaching methods following the school’s World language standards and curriculum guidelines. To assess achievement changes students are given a pre and post evaluation that consists of grades, a content quiz, and teacher evaluations. Overall, students’ achievement improved throughout the differentiation period but perhaps no more than could be expected with any teaching method applied diligently by a committed teacher. The implications for this research is that it establishes a connection between differentiation and achievement in second language learning where there are none. Keywords: differentiation, achievement, attitude, motivation *Note that due to COVID-19 restrictions and precautions this research did not actually take place. This is a simulated study with predicted results.
