Abstract: 4 pages ; International audience ; The paper accepts the reconstruction of uvular stops in Old Chinese as proposed in Pan (1997), with modifications. Specifically it is argued that Old Chinese uvulars evolve to Middle Chinese velars when preceded by an iambic presyllable. This will explain the cooccurrence of Middle Chinese velars and laryngeals in the same phonetic series and word families. It is also argued that the Middle Chinese reflex of Old Chinese *G is y-. This entails the claim that Middle Chinese y- has two sources in OC, viz. *l- and *G-. It is argued that OC l- corresponds to TB *l- and OC *G- corresponds to TB *y- or *g-y-.
