Las Comunidades Asiáticas en Latinoamérica
In: World Languages and Cultures (2021)
Abstract: This project undertakes the examination of several prominent Asian communities in Latin American countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, and others in understanding the diverse intersection that is the Asian-Latino culture and identity. Within the United States, there is a growing community of Asian-Latinos that share both the cultural identities of the Hispanic/Latinx community (cultural environment) and the Asian communities (familial and cultural upbringing). Likewise, in U.S. cities such as New York City and Los Angeles, there have been notable Asian-Latino restaurants that offer Asian cuisine and Latin cuisine, as well as a rise of new Asian-Latin infused cuisines alike. As a WLC student where I have studied both the languages (Spanish and Mandarin Chinese) and their respective cultures, this project represents the combination of both my interests, and I intend to learn and understand these communities and their cultural, societal, and economic interactions within Latin America. Throughout this project, I research the history of the community (immigration, historic & current events), their cultural presence (language/dialect use, celebrations/holidays, ethnic hub/centers, and cultural activities), their cultural identities (for several communities), the bilateral relations between the Asian and Latin American countries (prominent figures, foreign economic relations, etc.) and the prominent food culture (fusion, creation of new food genre). I have also converted my research into a web-based format (a blog), and so, I included screenshots and/or links of the website to every community accordingly.
