Abstract:
; In this paper we study the nature of cultural diversity in the Philippine archipelago and its management from a historical perspective until the present, attending to colonial processes and the main debates on Philippine identity. American colonial engineering and the doctrine of "Benevolent Assimilation" are analyzed, as well as the provincialization of minorities. The paper describes the major historiographical contributions of Philippine anthropology on the culture of the newly independent nation after 1946, and the cultural and linguistic policy since the 1987 Constitution, still active.
